In 1954, The Spaniels struck gold with Goodnight Sweetheart Goodnight. The five-piece doo-wop group watched the song rise to become Number 5 on the R&B charts. The song was written by Calvin Carter and James "Pookie" Hudson, lead singer for the Spaniels.
Rereleased by The McGuire Sisters, the song also become the close for the popular television program featuring Sha-Na-Na.
Later, the song would be sung by Ted Danson, Steve Guttenberg, and Tom Selleck in Three Men and a Baby.
The Lyrics:
Goodnight sweetheart, well it's time to go,
Goodnight sweetheart, well it's time to go,
I hate to leave you but I really must say,
Goodnight sweetheart, goodnight.
Goodnight sweetheart, well it's time to go,
Goodnight sweetheart, well it's time to go,
I hate to leave you but I really must say,
Goodnight sweetheart, goodnight.
Well, it's three o'clock in the morning
Baby I just can't get right
Well, I hate to leave you baby,
Don't mean maybe,
Because I love you so.
Goodnight sweetheart, well it's time to go,
Goodnight sweetheart, well it's time to go,
I hate to leave you but I really must say,
Oh goodnight sweetheart, goodnight.
Mother, and your father
Don't like it if I stay here too long
One kiss in the dark,
And I'll be going,
You know I hate to go.
Goodnight sweetheart, well it's time to go,
Goodnight sweetheart, well it's time to go,
I hate to leave you but I really must say,
Oh goodnight sweetheart, goodnight.
(fading verse)
Goodnight sweetheart, well it's time to go,
Goodnight sweetheart, well it's time to go,
I hate to leave you but I really must say,
Oh goodnight sweetheart, goodnight.
