Popularized by Jackie Kennedy, the bouffant hairdo really took off when Hollywood's glamour gals started flaunting the teased, combed, styled beehive confections. The bouffant's elegance highlighted the satin gowns of the early 60's creating a look that Hollywood couldn't resist.
By 1965, the bouffant craze was starting to fade, but it would take another four or five years for it to fade into history. Bouffants made a comeback in the late 1990's as campy throwbacks for retro rock groups like the B-52s, on television shows like MadTV, and as the style to wear for female impersonators.
While the look might be out, nobody can forget the glamourous era the bouffant represents. Of course, I'm not sure anyone wants to sit behind a bouffant-styled woman in any movie theatres!
